A cranial prosthesis is a wig or hairpiece used for medically related hair loss. The term often appears in conversations with care teams, wig providers and insurers. The American Cancer Society uses it when describing wigs and certain hairpieces for medical hair loss.

The name can sound unfamiliar, but the shopping questions are practical: Will it fit comfortably? Does it suit your preferred look? Can you manage its care? What does your individual insurance policy require?

Does “cranial prosthesis” mean something different from a wig?

The term describes the purpose of the hair replacement. It does not, by itself, specify a fiber, cap construction or insurance benefit. Ask about the actual unit rather than relying only on labels such as “medical wig.”

A useful consultation connects your preferences with clearly explained product details. You should know what is being offered, which options are available and what the ordering process involves.

Bring these questions to your fitting

  • Fit: Which measurements does this cap need, and how do they compare with the manufacturer’s chart?
  • Comfort: Can I examine the inside of the cap and discuss the areas that touch my scalp?
  • Appearance: Which parting, length, color and density options are available for this particular unit?
  • Care: What cleaning products and styling methods does the manufacturer recommend?
  • Timing: Is the wig ready to order, semi-custom or custom, and what creation time applies?

Describe how you expect to wear your wig. A daily routine, a workday or an occasional event may lead to different priorities. If you have scalp irritation or are receiving treatment, ask your care team about any product or attachment concerns.

What about insurance?

Do not assume that calling a wig a cranial prosthesis makes it covered. Ask your insurer about the policy’s eligibility criteria, documentation, provider rules and any authorization requirements before purchasing. Neither a prescription nor a billing code guarantees reimbursement.

Our medical wig insurance information explains questions you can ask before ordering. Your plan determines its benefits and claim decisions.

Plan your next conversation

You do not need to arrive knowing every cap or fiber term. Bring your questions, style references and any instructions your insurer has supplied. We can use that conversation to identify what needs confirmation before you choose a unit.
